Feeling unfilled? It happens. Try these easy changes to make life a little more content.
They say being happy is a choice, but sometimes our day-to-day tasks can become a little mundane. The fact is, we need to understand and believe in our own ability to impact our moods. Here are some ways to beat the staleness of routine and positively transform everyday tasks into more enjoyable pastimes.
Establish daily rituals
There’s a lot of stuff we have to do every day, so why not sneak something else in there that exists only to make you happy? Maybe this means listening to Miley Cyrus in the shower or grabbing a perfectly baked pain au chocolat on the way to work — we’re not judging. Figure out what can bring a smile to your face regularly, and make it a part of your daily routine.
Find a reason to wake up earlier
Whatever happens in the morning sets the mood for the day, so when you wake up late and have to rush around to get ready, you’re already starting from a less than ideal place. Feeling refreshed and relaxed when you leave the house will start your day on a more positive note. Do some self-reflection and find out if it takes a big, healthy breakfast or a luxurious face mask to make waking up earlier worth it for you.
Prep the night before
Taking some time to set up a killer outfit the night before will save you the hassle in the morning and ensure your look is flawless ahead of time. It could also give your mood a preemptive boost. Even if you wake up on the wrong side of the bed, when you realize you’ve already styled the perfect I’m-killing-it outfit — complete with some on-point accessories — your mood will likely improve.
Maximize your commute
Most of us commute each day, and it’s not always so enjoyable. Looking on the bright side, there’s an opportunity here to take advantage of this time, like reading or listening to a book or learning a new language. If you take public transportation, hop off a stop or two before your office so you can enjoy a longer walk — and maybe even find a new go-to coffee shop.
Improve your surroundings
Fill your workspace with happy memories, like a wacky souvenir from a fun vacation or a photo of your beloved, goofy puppy. Choose a leafy green plant to add some life and color. All of these things subconsciously affect our mood and can help give us a sense of control over our attitude throughout the day.
Break for lunch
Always leave your desk for lunch! Find a friend who works nearby and plan to meet up during your break to check out a new restaurant or take an express class together. Breaking up your day with something unrelated to your job will help to clear the mind a bit so you can return to work feeling more refreshed and ready to tackle the second half of the day.
Post-work plans
It’s always a good idea to have something specific to look forward to come quitting time, and it’s especially helpful on stressful days. Scheduling a class or a massage after work — and squeezing in some quality me-time — will always make a difference in your day.
